After spending so much time at home the past year, you may be itching to start a home project to make your surroundings more pleasing to the eye. You may think that you need costly renovations, and it’s overwhelming figuring out just where to start with a home improvement project, but did you know that a fairly simple one is painting your cabinets?
Whether in your kitchen or in your bathroom, giving your cabinets a facelift can improve the look and feel of your home enormously. After figuring out which spaces you want to paint, choosing your colors and tools are the next step in the process, and then you can begin! Keep reading for some tips on how to paint your cabinets and what you should consider when doing so.
1. The first step to this project is to remove hardware and doors off the spaces you want to paint. Doing this will help you only get paint on surfaces you intend to paint and will help prevent unnecessary messes that could delay your project.
2. After removing the hardware, you should give your cabinets and cabinet doors a good clean with a degreaser. Once you’ve cleaned the buildup of oils and food residue off your cabinets, apply some primer on a small inconspicuous area to make sure that it will work for your cabinets. Once there is enough bonding/adhesion in the spot where you applied the test spot of primer, you can proceed with priming the whole space you want to paint.
3. Sand the surface. Once you’ve applied primer over what you want painted, you can sand that down with a very fine grit sandpaper to make sure it gets off any extra blobs that may affect your paint job. Using a very fine grit sandpaper helps to make the surface smoother to work on so the paint you choose goes on silky smooth.
4. Start painting! Now the fun part can begin. Using the color of your choice, go over fine or small details with a smaller paint brush so you don’t miss any little spots. Once you’ve completed the fine details of your cabinets, you can use a roller brush to paint any of the larger surfaces you wish. This will be your first coat of paint, but you will need to add a second coat after the first one dries to ensure a beautiful, rich color and to fill in any little spaces that may have been overlooked.
There you have it! Painting the cabinets in your home make a huge difference aesthetically, and it’s a simple project that can be done over a few days.
