You want your home to look great and also match what you like. Painting your home can be overwhelming, but first and foremost, you've got to pick some colors you like in order to get the ball rolling!

If only choosing a color palette for your interiors were as easy as picking a color, any color. Choosing a color is probably the most difficult part in painting your home, but it doesn’t have to be! Use these tips to help jumpstart your transformation for your home.

- Choose a color scheme from the largest pattern in your space: Say you have a patterned upholstery, an oriental rug or even a piece of artwork in your space, pick and choose colors you like from the pattern. For a neutral wall paint color, look to that pattern’s whites and beiges.

- To start: Begin with the formal areas of your home; living room, dining room and entry way. Choose a color scheme for those areas first and then pull one color from the scheme.

- Decorate dark to light, vertically: Designer, Mark McCauley says a “real cookbook” way to make any space look good without much risk is to use darker color values for the floor, medium color values for the walls and light values for the ceiling. “Any interior space replicates the outside world,” he says. “The exterior environment is generally darker below our feet (the earth itself), medium-valued as you look straight ahead (buildings/trees) and lighter skyward.

- Utilize the color wheel: In general, analogous color schemes – colors next to each other on the color wheel, such as blue and green – are more casual and relaxing and can work best in informal or private spaces. This is a great way to create a relaxing bedroom space, since that is where you primarily rest and recover.

- Your clothes can help: Why? Most people buy clothes in the colors that they like to wear and they look best in. Similarly, you should dress your rooms in the colors that flatter you. For example, if your go to is denim, consider a navy sofa or if you look (and feel!) perkiest in bright yellows, try mixing in a few citrusy accents with pillows/accessories.

- Add Some Black: Designer Mark McCauley advises that adding a bit of black in every room clarifies the rest of the room’s colors. For just a small pop, try adding a black lampshade or a black vase; for bigger impact, paint your kitchen’s base cabinets in the high-drama hue.

- Follow the gray trends: Use todays trendiest neutral, gray, to work in any style interior. Gray allows the color to appear either warm or cool and pair beautifully with both pastels and kicky colors.

- Use the 60-30-10 rule: When decorating a space, divide the colors into components of 60 percent of a dominant color (walls), 30 percent of a secondary color (upholstery) and 10 percent of an accent color (accessories),” advises McCauley. The ratio ensures that the colors are balanced and that there is just enough pop for interest.

- Make small spaces pop: If you have a small room in your house, painting it white does not make it bigger. Instead, try painting it with a look-at-me color choice and that will allow it to expand with light!
