For only a few dollars, paint can transform nearly anything into something fresh, dazzling and new. However, you can’t use the same kind of paint on all surfaces. Learn the best type of paint and how to prep common household materials such as brick, tile, porcelain, concrete, fiberglass and more.

Painting Common Household Surfaces:

- Drywall: for starters make sure the drywall is free of any dust from sanding and for painted drywall, you’ll want to repair any cracks or holes with spackling compound. When painting, you will want to use a top-quality acrylic latex primer.

- Glass: as this is a popular hobby and/or craft project. Check to see if your local paint store has formulated paints for glass. (Some may require an undercoating). Lighter colors tend to be better for light transmission!

- Laminate Countertops and Cabinet Faces: to get started, roughing up the surfaces with a 150-grit sandpaper will help give you the end result you’re looking for.

- Fabric: the best way to paint fabric is to first wash the fabrics without detergent and let dry as well as stretch the fabric out and lay it flat, if possible. Water-based paint that is specifically formulated for use with fabrics will be your best-friend. Always read the paint manufacturer’s instructions because there’s a chance you may have to fix the paint by putting the material in a dryer.

- Metal: if you’re looking to repair any metal furniture that you may have outside or inside, start by removing any rust and flaking with a wire brush and then sand with a 220-grit sandpaper. Rinse with plain water and let that dry. To begin painting, use an exterior-grade primer and paint that are both formulated for metal and this method also can be used for steel, aluminum and iron.
