front steps crew

The task of repainting the exterior of a home can seem daunting. But by following some simple steps and performing routine maintenance, you can lessen the amount of elbow grease it takes, and end up with better results.

Clean the Exterior. Mildew loves houses. Whether you plan on scrubbing and washing yourself or you'd rather hire a professional with a pressure washer, be sure and remove all dirt and debris from surfaces to be painted.

Remove Loose Paint. Break out the trusty old paint scraper and get those loose flakes off the surface.

Sand High Spots. Grab some 80 grit sandpaper and get started on the high spots of your home, ensuring a smooth, level finish remains.

Use Filler. You might find racks, holes, dents, and chips after cleaning and sanding. Fill with patching compound, or if the issues are fairly large, enlist the help of a professional.

Prime It. Give your prepared surface a coat of primer to make sure you have a nice uniform surface to paint.

Caulk the Joints. Look for creases and joints that can be penetrated by water and air and seal them with a quality silicone or acrylic caulk to keep the elements where they belong - outside.

Choose the Right Paint. Making sure you have the right paint can't be understated. Should you use a gloss or a satin? Be sure and consult a pro to make sure your house gets what it needs.

Perform Routine Maintenance. Keep your exterior as fresh as it can be by periodically inspecting and replacing caulking where needed, removing mildew or mold with a prescribed house cleaner, spraying heavy pollen accumulations down to prevet staining, and touching up paint blisters and peelings before they increase in size.
